THE HIGH ALTITUDE WINE ROUTE
A 200 km route where you can taste the qualities of the “high altitude wines”, the vineyards are located between 1600 m in Cafayate and over 2400 m in Molinos. These wines are characterized by their intense color and great character. The wine region of Salta also has an impressive colonial architecture dating back to the time of the Spanish conquistadors. The presence and cultural influence of Bolivia, Peru and Paraguay are also felt and give a touch of authenticity to the place. Although the wine region of Salta is one of the smallest in the country, it produces about 1% of the country’s wine production, the most striking feature being the cultivation of the white grape Torrontés.
THE TASTE OF TORRONTÉS
The Torrontés is the emblematic grape of Argentina, the only 100% Argentine grape variety. The region that produces this variety is the northwest of Argentina because of its altitude and microclimate. The valley of Cafayate, in Salta, has gained a worldwide reputation for this variety. In this region, the vineyards reach an altitude of up to 3,000 meters above sea level and rainfall is rare.
A grape that leaves no one indifferent, grown in Salta is distinguished by its white appearance, very aromatic, with a wild/fruity palate and sometimes with a bitter taste. Many wineries located along the wine route offer tastings and the city’s restaurants offer pairings that will leave you very satisfied.
The Torrontés wine and its pairing offer are very wide, enjoy it with locro, empanadas, fish, seafood, Asian and Mexican cuisine.
Visit the Wines of Argentina website to learn more about the history of Torrontés wine.
